Plot
Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman, Irena Gut tells the remarkable story of Irena Gut and the triumphs of the human spirit over devastating tragedy as she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the atrocities of the Holocaust.. Although this Canadian film had a much wider theatrical release in Canada than the typical Canadian film, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to give the film a substantial marketing budget.

"Irena’s Covenant" tells the story of a brave Polish woman, Irena Gut Opdyke, who is trapped in a street residence to be used as a laborer for the Nazis who have taken over Poland. Through her humanity and cunning ways, Irena is able to rescue and house 11 Jewish workers from her previous workplace and transport them to the new villa, where she hides them in the cellar and then in another secret room, all under the roof of the SS officer.

I found this production to be very well acted and directed, and the location shooting in Poland was very effective. The film lacked the emotional power of a “Schindler’s List”; or “One Life”, but the film is worth seeing and learning about another heroic person who put her own life in danger to help Jewish victims of the death camps.
